Hace ya unos meses que me convertí en asidua a las inauguraciones de Hoxton Art Gallery. Me gusta mucho la selección de artistas de Lydia Cowpetwait, comisaria de la galería, y el ambiente siempre es muy distendido.
A few months ago I became a regular at the Hoxton Art Gallery‘s openings. I really like Lydia Cowpertwait‘s (head of gallery) selection of artists and there is always a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere at their shows.
En esta ocasión, hemos podido disfrutar de la exposición individual del artista americano Mathew Tom. Se trata de su primera individual en Londres aunque tuvo ya bastantes colectivas en la ciudad.
On this occasion, I attended the american artist Mathew Tom‘s exhibition. It was his first solo show in London, even though he has already a good number of group shows here.
Sus óleos nos transportan a objetos de anticuario, que se repiten en series de dos o tres piezas. Hace hincapié en la simetría con pequeñas variaciones y juega con el contraste de texturas de los objetos retratados. Utiliza iconografía religiosa y mitológica, dándole una vuelta de tuerca convirtiéndolo en una irónica crítica a la cultura de masas.
In his paintings we are taken to antique shops, with objects that repeat themselves in series of two or three pieces. Mathew plays with symmetry, throwing slight variations and toys with the contrast of the objects’ textures. He references religious and mythological iconography, giving them a twist that creates an ironic criticism to the culture of masses.
