Ken Currie, uno de mis artistas preferidos y que aún no tiene galería en España. No sé a qué esperan.
El 4 de Septiembre, durante un paseo por el centro de Londres, fuimos a dar con una atractiva galería de arte: Flowers gallery. Tiene tres sedes; dos en Londres, Kingsland road y Cork Street y una en Nueva York. Indagando por su web he descubierto artistas muy interesantes y el opening de Ken Currie al que fuimos nos ha dejado impresionados.
Se trata de un artista escocés con cerca de treinta años de trayectoria.
Presentó para esta exposición una fuerte contraposición de temas y colores, dejando al descubierto su impronta brutal, terrible; de un estilo rotundo y muy atrayente.
On the 4th of September, while walking around Central London, we ended up finding an interesting art gallery: Flowers Gallery. It has three branches: two in London, in Kingsland Road and Cork Street and one in New York. Browsing their website, I found many exciting artists, including Ken Currie, whose impressive opening we attended in the Cork Street branch.
He’s a Scottish artist with about thirty years of career.
He presented in this exhibition a strong contrast of themes and colours, exposing his brutal imprint of an absolute and fascinating style.
Son tres series de lienzos sobre fondo negro, dialogantes entre sí: un conejo de caza muerto, que evidencia distintas fases del proceso de descomposición; una pierna de cordero y otra de conejo frescas, rojizas y brillantes; y una secuencia de autorretratos con tez pálida y en profundo sueño. Los tres conjuntos por separado, descontextualizándolos, nos mostrarían unos lienzos de técnica meticulosa y cuidada, acorde con los temas que trata: retratos y naturalezas muertas.
Sin embrargo, la unión de los tres, genera un contexto nuevo que habla del paso del tiempo, de nosotros como animales, de nosotros como carne y de la carne como alimento. Currie, por tanto, nos obliga a reflexionar sobre incómodos tópicos como la desmitificación de la raza humana, la depredación o el canibalismo, con una simple yuxtaposición de temas corientes. El contraste del color de su piel con el rojo de la carne fresca y el manejo tenebrista de la luz son los puntos calientes de la muestra.
It’s three series of black background oil on canvas, dialoguing with each other:
A dead rabbit in different stages of decomposition, the fresh severed leg of a lamb and of a rabbit, red and bright; a sequence of self portraits in which the artist appears to us in deep sleep, his skin pale. The three ensembles by themselves, decontextualized, show us works of impressive and thorough technique in accordance with the themes they address: portraits and still lives.
But the union of the three series gives us a new context that speaks to us of the passage of time, of ourselves as animals, of ourselves as flesh, as food. Currie, then, forces us to reflect about uncomfortable subjects, as the destruction of the idea of the human race as the apex predator, the frailty of the flesh and cannibalism with a simple juxtaposition of ordinary themes. The contrast between his skin with the red of the flesh and the tenebrist handling of light are the highlights of the exhibition.
Fue una inauguración no demasiado concurrida pero con gente interesada en la obra y en el artista.
El ambiente invitaba a indagar más sobre la galería y sus artistas; de hecho, no tardamos en preguntar detalles. Flowers Gallery no busca grandes afluencias, sino un público realmente interesado en sus proyectos. No tienen lista abierta de mailing list, sino una sección de noticias en la web donde podemos acceder a toda la información sobre sus artistas, inauguraciones, proyectos y notas de prensa.
The inauguration wasn’t too crowded, but everyone present seemed to be interested in the paintings and the artist.
It was an environment that invited us to know more about the gallery and its artists; Flowers Gallery is not looking for a big attendance, only people that are actually interested in their projects. They don’t have an open mailing list, only a news section in their website where have access to all the information about their artists, future openings and projects and press releases.
Es un espacio, el de Cork Street, de dos plantas; en la principal, con puerta a la calle es donde se desarrolló el solo de Currie. La otra sala está bajando unas escaleras y es también bastante amplia. Allí tienen en este momento una colectiva con varios artistas que representan.
The Cork Street branch is a two storey space; in the main room, with its door to the street, it’s where the Ken Currie solo exhibition took place. The other room is in the basement and it’s also quite spacious. In there we can find, at the moment, a collective exhibition showing the work of several artists represented by the gallery.
